Importance of Taking a Break // Talking about Hiatus, Burnouts and being able to read for yourself

Hello everyone! It’s been some time since I last posted because I had my exams and after that I just took an unplanned hiatus because of feeling burnt out and I am finally feeling motivated enough to write something. So I thought that the first thing I want to write about is the just how beneficial this hiatus turned out to me and why taking a break every now and then is so important.

Prior to this hiatus, blogging had started to feel like a chore and I couldn’t even find the motivation to read reviews of books I liked. Plus when there’s also a reading slump starting and it feels just overall unmotivated. I usually feel super guilty when not posting anything so whenever I have to take a hiatus I feel really off. But this time due to exams I had no choice but to take a break and while the first 2-3 days felt weird, there also came this big relief of not forcing myself to create content and just taking a rest. It’s not until I actually took it did I realize how much I needed it. This time allowed me to look back on the posts I wrote and whether there is anything I want to change and all the better content ideas I could come up with.

When creating content, burnouts are normal. Continuously churning out new content can get exhausting and at this point it is important to recognize this and take a step back or else it starts to become mentally exhausting. This can also affect the quality of the content you post. So if you feel unmotivated or it if blogging feels like a chore or forced, I am here to tell you to take a break and relax. Sometimes, it’s better to take a one week break even in the middle for no reason other than to give yourself a break which you very much deserve. For me blogging is my hobby, like it is for a lot of people and so sometimes actual jobs/university/college/school can get stressful, so it’s important to allow yourself to take a break without feeling guilty.

This hiatus helped me decide if I’m truly enjoying the content I’m making and if there are any changes I need/want to make. I have been really proud of my Woven In Books series this year and I have a few posts planned in that and I hope to bring a lot of changes in that from next year and make it more fun and better! For the end of this year/ start of the next year, I have also planned a blog revamp, which would be nothing major but just some small design changes so I can make it more like me. I am excited for it and I hope to make it so much more prettier!!

Coming to the last thing I wanted to talk about is being able to read for myself. I was really happy and lucky to have received some amazing arcs this year but I also felt overwhelmed at times with the amount of books I had so I definitely want to learn to monitor the amount of arcs I get so that I can truly enjoy every book I read. I got the idea from my friend Nandini to keep a cap for the amount of arcs I take per month so as to not overwhelm myself and can truly promote the books I read.

Keeping this in mind, for the month of November and December I have decided to just read books for myself which means all the physical and ebooks which have been staring at me since the start of the year just waiting to be read. So hopefully I can read for me without any plan and just purely pick up what I want based on my mood without feeling guilty of neglecting my arcs.

This post was kind of everywhere but mainly what I want to say is learn to take a break as and when you need. Be mindful that it doesn’t start becoming a chore or a forced habit as that could quickly turn into frustration. I hope you can take care of yourself and I’m ending this post with lots of love and good vibes your way!! I will be posting some new reviews and recommendation posts soon!

  1. I did go into a burnout and just came back to blogging and reading quite recently. To be honest, I am not sure if I have shed the burnout yet, but I am gonna try! And the hiatus has definitely helped.

  2. I’m so glad you took a break! 2020 has been so tough on all of us but I can’t imagine the stress of having a job and studying for exams. I’m really happy you prioritised yourself in this time. I’m so here for all the changes in content and design. 💕 (Didn’t expect to be mentioned here, thank you 💖)

  3. I’m so glad you took that break, Krisha! Since I recently took a hiatus I absolutely get what you mean so I’m very excited to see you refreshed and ready with more content 🙂
I think it’s a great decision to read for yourself. I’m one of the very few people who generally requests less ARCs so I’m usually on top of them but I’ve been trying to focus on reducing my physical TBR which has been going okay so far.
Good luck and I hope to see some great content from you soon ❤

  4. I completely agree with you here! Burnouts are real and it’s exhausting to always be thinking of what content to produce and how to keep improving. Sometimes it’s nice to just read for ourselves without that constant worry. I’m glad that the break was beneficial for you!

  5. I totally understand burnouts and I’m glad your break has been good for you—both in rest and reflection. I actually haven’t had a burnout in a long time but that’s only because I had bad ones before and they made me understand how to manage blogging and keep it a fun hobby. Largely, I do it by not sticking to boundaries and blogging about everything (half of which are rants and life updates lol) which keeps blogging fresh. Book blogging is really stressful, especially with ARCs and keeping up with the latest books and showering love to all the books that need it. I think we should learn to pick our battles and focus on one or two things at a time instead of EVERYTHING which we feel like we ~have~ to do, especially with the book community being vast, loud, and fast.
