Avatar: The Last Airbender characters as my Favourite Bookish Characters

Hello everyone. *cue the Avatar theme song*

I am so excited to bring this post to you today!! I recently saw Avatar: The Last Airbender tv series (I know I am late) and I absolutely loved it. It was just so perfect: the characters, the storyline, the redemption arc, it was just *chef’s kiss*. I can’t even choose a favourite character but I think we can all agree that the best character is Uncle Iroh.

So after watching this series it got me thinking if these ATLA characters match or have the same characteristics as any of the bookish characters I have read about. and Lo Behold, I found out I read and watch about similar chaotic characters who I love so much!! Some of these characters might not be as similar but they do have many similar qualities which made me choose them. So without further ado let’s get into it!

AANG – Malik from A Song of Wraiths and Ruin

Aang was one of the most precious characters ever. His character goes through so much in discovering himself and at the same time he also stays the same kind person he is. This reminds me so much of Malik from A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A.Brown. Malik is also a precious cinnamon roll who discovers himself and even after going through so much stays the same throughout!

KATARA – Laila from The Gilded Wolves

Katara is a fierce character and a typical mom friend. She takes care of everything and everyone but also needs someone to take care of her from time to time. She’s vulnerable as well and we see how she deals with her demons. She reminds me a lot of Laila from The Gilded Wolves who is also a mom friend and taking care of everyone but who can kick ass just as good.

SOKKA – Kitay from The Poppy War and Percy Jackson

Sokka is hilarious and smart. He mastered the fighting tactics of all four nations plus he is also the main strategist of the group and for all this, he has exactly two braincells. I was actually pretty confused who to choose for this so I tried to choose the closest I could which is Kitay from The Poppy War. I wouldn’t call Kitay as hilarious but he does have his sassy moments and also he is smart and has two braincells. Another character is Percy Jackson because the sass and sense of humor is so same!

TOPH – Rin from The Poppy War

Toph is the most badass character hands down. She literally invents metal bending out of spite and we stan hard. The one person she reminds me of is Rin because the pure chaotic energy they both exude and how a lot of what Rin does is for revenge and spite too.

ZUKO – Dara from The Fever King

Zuko has the best redemption arc and honestly when I think of who Zuko reminds me of its always Dara from The Fever King who comes to mind first. They both have similar lives and Dara is just as precious and awkward as Zuko and I love them!

SUKI – Carmen from We Set the Dark on Fire

Suki is one of the best characters I think. She is a fierce warrior and knows how to show people their face (aka when she humbles Sokka in the start and brings him to the ground). She reminds me so much of Carmen from We set the dark on fire who is underestimated by many too but she is simply amazing and a great warrior.

APPA AND MOMO – The Firebird from Wicked as you wish, Azi from The Bone witch

Appa and Momo are the best. And they remind me of The Firebird and Azi. They’re magical beings but then they are just so loyal and amazing that I think they would match well.

wicked as you wish

AZULA – Esmae from A Spark of White Fire/ with hints of Rin from The Poppy War

Azula’s is one of the best villains ever. She is ruthless and fierce. But we also see how this stems from childhood issues. She reminds me of Esmae from A Spark of White Fire who is also taking revenge against her family and her brother. Esmae is also very powerful and stops at nothing. I have also mentioned Rin because they both exude the sort of energy where they’re just completely chaotic.

TY LEE – Kallia from Where Dreams Descend

Ty Lee is an underappreciated character and treated like that by her friends too. She reminds of Kallia from Where Dreams Descend who is also a performer and not appreciated by the people around her.

MAI – Tea from The Bone witch series

Mai is the kind of character who can be deadly but just chooses not to. Her love for Zuko is pure and she truly shines as a character with him. She reminds me of one of my all time favourite Tea from The Bone Witch who is deadly but also loves Kalen so much and how soft she is with him just like Mai is with Zuko.

UNCLE IROH – Kali from A Spark of White Fire

Uncle Iroh is the purest character. His love and care for Zuko was precious. There’s not many characters like him but he does remind me of Kali from A Spark of White Fire who is also super protective of Esmae and loves her so much and is her mentor. (also read a spark of white fire if you haven’t and thank me later)

BUMI – Altair from We Hunt the Flame

Bumi is..weird. He is powerful but also just plain weird and hilarious. Now Altair isn’t like Bumi is a weird day but in the sense that they both are hilarious and completely surprising characters. You won’t really know unless you read/watch just how powerful they are and they hide all that behind being goofy.

JET – Muntadhir from City of Brass

Jet is smart and can be cunning and hence reminds me on Muntadhir who is a lot like that. Their conditions made them and shaped them. Also you would be lying if you say there wasn’t a little tension between Jet and Zuko during their scenes together. Just like reading Muntadhir’s scenes Jamshid. 🙂

FIRELORD OZAI – The Commander from An Ember in  the Ashes

Firelord Ozai is the literal worst and reminds me of The Commander from An Ember in the Ashes. Both are bad parents who have made the lives of their children hell and deserve to be defeated.

So these are just my interpretations of the characters and of course everyone may have different choices but these are just my faves! I also want to shout out Shealea for helping me brainstorm and answering my questions!! Make sure to follow Caffeine Book Tours to participate in all her amazing book tours!
