Synopsis: Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.
Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself. (Goodreads)

I had heard a lot of this book and I was really happy to know that it lived up to its hype and is easily one of my favourite reads of the year. The story revolves around three main characters- Laia, Elias and Helene. In this book, the story alternates between Elias and Laia.
This book has one of the most intense and engaging plot. It will be very difficult to keep the book down, you will want to keep on reading. The Commandant is hands-down one of the best villains in a fictional world. Her story is going to be really interesting. The characters are all so well written, it feels like you are living the story with them.
The Story and Characters
I am thoroughly impressed with the dark and magical plot with such an enigmatic story. I thought it would be like a typical rebellion story but there was so much more. This book stands out for me the most because it was the kind of book which sucks you right in and you have to remind yourself that its fictional. It was just that beautiful and powerful.
The characters are amazing, fleshed out and nuanced. Elias and Laia are such strong characters and morally grey so that make for interesting reads. Helene is also one of the best characters too and I am excited to read more about her.
Overall, this is an excellent book I will be recommending forever. So if you’re finding a fantasy novel with amazing characters, page turning plot and intense story, An Ember in the ashes will be just perfect.
